Book 18/52 of My #52Books52Weeks Bucket List Challenge
I’ve been a long-time listener of the Dave Ramsey Podcast, and I love his straight-talking, no-BS approach to money. So, I figured it was time to go straight to the source and dive into The Total Money Makeover—his famous 6 Baby Steps formula for financial success.
I read it. Then my kids read it. That’s how powerful and practical this book is.
Dave doesn’t sugarcoat anything. He’s all about personal responsibility, discipline, and getting your financial house in order—without excuses. His advice isn’t sexy or complicated—it’s simple, proven, and it works.
Save $1,000 for an Emergency Fund – Before doing anything else, build a small buffer to keep life’s unexpected expenses from derailing you.
Pay Off All Debt (Except the House) Using the Debt Snowball Method – List debts smallest to largest, attack the smallest first, and build momentum.
Save 3-6 Months of Expenses in a Fully Funded Emergency Fund – This creates a safety net, so you never have to rely on debt again.
Invest 15% of Income for Retirement – Pay your future self first by consistently investing in retirement accounts.
Save for Your Kids' College Fund (If Applicable) – If you have kids, plan ahead so they can avoid student loan debt.
Pay Off Your Mortgage Early & Build Wealth – Once you’re completely debt-free, you can focus on growing your wealth and living life on your terms.
Financial Freedom = More Choices – When money isn’t a constant stress, you have the freedom to focus on experiences, not just expenses.
Debt is a Dream Killer – If you’re drowning in debt, it’s hard to take risks, travel, or start that passion project. Get rid of it ASAP.
Discipline Creates Opportunities – Just like with a fitness goal or a Bucket List challenge, financial success comes from small, consistent actions over time.
A Strong Financial Foundation Lets You Say YES – Whether it’s a spontaneous trip, a new business venture, or helping others, having money gives you options.
Wealth is About More Than Money – Ramsey emphasizes that true wealth is about living generously, helping others, and creating a legacy.
If you’re ready to stop making excuses and start making progress with your money, this book is a must-read.
So, be honest: Are you in control of your finances, or are they controlling you?
If you want a no-nonsense, proven plan to get ahead financially, grab The Total Money Makeover and get to work.
Stay tuned for Book 19 of 52 as I continue this adventure of learning and growth!
