To say this is a personal blog is an understatement. I have suffered from this big time! As I've stepped out into the world as a professional public speaker and coach, Imposter syndrome has reared its ugly head. Who do you think you are? Why would they listen to you? What gives you the right to charge that per hour? Who's going to pay that? Who do you think you are...Tony Robbins?
Imposter Syndrome is a psychological phenomenon where an individual doubts their skills, accomplishments, and abilities and has a persistent fear of being exposed as a fraud. It often occurs in high-achieving individuals, and they feel like they do not deserve the success they have achieved. Imposter Syndrome can affect one's personal and professional life and can lead to self-doubt, anxiety, and stress.
Here are 7 steps to overcome Imposter Syndrome:
Recognize and Acknowledge your feelings: The first step is to recognize and acknowledge your feelings of inadequacy. Once you recognize that you have Imposter Syndrome, it becomes easier to work on it.
Identify your Triggers: Try to identify the triggers that make you feel like a fraud. This could be a specific task, person, or situation. Understanding your triggers can help you prepare and manage these situations better.
Celebrate your Achievements: Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small they are. This will help boost your confidence and remind you that you are capable of success.
Stop Comparing Yourself to Others: Comparing yourself to others can fuel Imposter Syndrome. Focus on your own journey and progress, and avoid comparing yourself to others.
Seek Support: Talk to someone you trust about how you feel. This could be a friend, family member, or a therapist. They can offer you support and guidance.
Practice Self-Care: Take care of yourself physically and mentally. This includes getting enough sleep, eating well, exercising, and doing things you enjoy.
Embrace Failure: Failure is a natural part of the learning process. Instead of seeing it as a sign of incompetence, embrace it as an opportunity to learn and grow.
Remember, overcoming Imposter Syndrome is a journey, and it takes time and effort. Be kind to yourself, and don't give up.
My last tip that I give to all my clients is this...go out and get evidence of you doing great things in the world. That could be results with friends and family, testimonials, referrals, likes, loves, and shares of your content. Take baby steps. Aim to build up a case file for the positive. Just like a court of law. Build a case file of evidence that proves (to you) that you are worthy. If you consciously do this, I can guarantee that this real-world evidence will be too hard to ignore and it will drown out the voice of doubt in your head.
As I've done for so many clients, I'd love to help you to overcome Imposter Syndrome. It's cool. We all suffer from it to some extent.
