Work-Life-Balance Is B.S. Try Work-Life-Blend Instead

I've been working online for over 10 years...before it was "COVID cool." To work online effectively, you need a lot of self-motivation, discipline, set, scheduled daily habits & self-regulated rules. During the pandemic, we saw a lot of people switch to remote working, working from home mainly. Many couldn't hack it. Trying to get the balance between work and life right was tough already. Working from home made it even tougher. So here's a concept I've been talking about for years. It's called "Work-Life-Blend".

For many years, the term "work-life balance" has been used to describe the concept of finding a healthy equilibrium between one's professional and personal life. However, as our society and work habits continue to evolve, there has been a growing shift towards using the term "work-life blend" instead.

So, what exactly is work-life blend, and how is it different from work-life balance? Simply put, work-life blend refers to the idea that our work and personal lives are not entirely separate entities that must be kept in perfect balance, but rather that they are interconnected and should be blended together in a way that works for us.

In a traditional work-life balance model, the goal is to keep work and personal life completely separate, with a strict dividing line between the two. This can lead to a lot of stress and pressure, as individuals feel like they need to constantly juggle their time and prioritize one over the other.

In contrast, a work-life blend model recognizes that work and personal life are not always going to be completely separate. For example, we may need to take a work call during our child's soccer game, or we may want to take a personal day to recharge and focus on our mental health. By blending our work and personal lives in a way that works for us, we can achieve a more harmonious and fulfilling life overall.

One of the benefits of work-life blend is that it allows us to be more flexible with our time and focus on what really matters to us. We can prioritize our work when we need to, but also make time for the things that bring us joy and fulfillment outside of work. This can lead to a greater sense of overall satisfaction and happiness in our lives.

Of course, there are challenges that come with work-life blend as well. It can be difficult to set boundaries and avoid burnout when our work and personal lives are so intertwined. It requires a certain level of self-awareness and discipline to make sure that we are not neglecting either aspect of our lives.

Ultimately, whether we choose to use the term "work-life balance" or "work-life blend," the most important thing is that we are intentional about creating a fulfilling and satisfying life that works for us. We should strive to find a healthy balance between our work and personal lives, but also recognize that this balance may look different for each of us. By embracing the concept of work-life blend, we can create a life that is both successful and fulfilling, in whatever way we define it.
