Home Schooling Pros & Cons To Live Your Bucket List Life!

November 21, 20235 min read

The pandemic forced us all to adapt to homeschooling overnight. A lot of kids and parents loved it. A lot of kids and parents hated it. As a proud step-dad to 4 kids, with the 2 oldest living out of home and the 2 youngest (being 2 twin 16 year old boys) living at home, we got a real taste of homeschooling. We loved it though. It actually bought us all closer together.

As a result of the pandemic, the sudden rise hybrid and remote work flexibility, many parents decided that they are going to continue schooling their kids from home. Homeschooling has emerged as an increasingly embraced alternative educational model. It empowers families to craft learning journeys that align with their children's distinct needs and passions.

For parents aiming to provide comprehensive education and a life of fulfilment, homeschooling stands as a potent choice. But there's definitely pros and cons, right? This blog is dedicated to outlining the advantages and challenges of homeschooling. I've included some of the latest statistics and research too so that you can go deeper if this topic resonates. As far as you and your family living your Bucket List Life, homeschooling just might be that one big last decision you have to make in order to fulfil it. ENJOY! 🙂 ✅ 🙏🏻 ❤️

Pro's of Homeschooling...

Adaptability and Customization:

Homeschooling offers the freedom to develop a tailored curriculum that aligns with the child's learning style, interests, and pace. This adaptable model encourages a broader educational experience, including travel, exploration, and pursuit of passions not usually feasible within the scope of traditional schooling (Lines, 2019). According to recent statistics by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), about 68% of homeschooling parents mark flexibility as the foremost reason for choosing homeschooling (NCES, 2023).

Targeted Attention:

In a homeschooling environment, students receive focused attention from their parents or tutors, facilitating custom-made instruction and prompt feedback. This individualistic approach supports quicker learning, enhanced comprehension, and heightened academic performance (Ray, 2021). Recent studies indicate that homeschooled students consistently score higher on standardized tests compared to their traditionally schooled counterparts (NCES, 2023).

Emotional and Social Growth:

Contrary to common misconceptions, homeschooling can nurture robust emotional and social growth. Homeschooled kids often participate in community activities, join clubs, take part in cooperatives, and engage with a broad spectrum of people, leading to a comprehensive socialization experience (Kunzman & Gaither, 2021). According to a study by the National Home Education Research Institute, homeschooled students are actively involved in an average of 5.7 social activities weekly, such as community organizations, sports teams, and volunteer work (Ray, 2021).

Secure and Nurturing Environment:

Homeschooling provides a safe and nurturing atmosphere for children to learn and explore, without the concerns of bullying, peer pressure, or negative influences commonly encountered in traditional school settings. This supportive ambiance promotes emotional well-being and self-assurance (Medlin, 2020). The NCES reports that 93% of homeschooling parents cite concerns about the school environment, like safety, drugs, and negative peer pressure, as a significant factor in their decision to homeschool (NCES, 2023).

Cons of Homeschooling...

Absence of Professional Expertise:

Parents choosing homeschooling may lack specific knowledge or training in certain subjects, posing a challenge to providing comprehensive instruction across all academic fields. However, this limitation can be addressed by using supplemental resources, online courses, or collaborating with other homeschooling families (Ray, 2021). The NCES notes that 36% of homeschooling parents recognize their own lack of expertise as a significant challenge in homeschooling (NCES, 2023).

Restricted Social Interaction:

While homeschooling offers diverse opportunities for socialization, it may not mimic the daily interaction seen in traditional schools. Kids might miss the opportunity to develop specific social skills, such as navigating intricate social dynamics or resolving conflicts within large peer groups (Basham, Merrifield, & Hepburn, 2019). Nonetheless, research suggests that homeschooled students often demonstrate positive social behavior and maintain healthy relationships with peers and adults (Kunzman & Gaither, 2021).

Time and Commitment:

Homeschooling demands substantial time, energy, and dedication from parents. Balancing teaching duties with other obligations, such as work or personal pursuits, can be challenging. Families contemplating homeschooling must carefully assess their capability and readiness to take on this responsibility (Clark, 2021). The NCES reveals that 26% of homeschooling parents identify time constraints as a major challenge in homeschooling (NCES, 2023).

Limited Exposure to Diversity:

Homeschooled children might have restricted exposure to diverse perspectives and experiences, as interactions mainly occur within their immediate community or homeschooling network. Parents need to consciously expose their children to different cultures, backgrounds, and viewpoints to foster a well-rounded worldview (Lines, 2023). However, homeschooling can also offer opportunities for immersive travel experiences and cultural exploration, enriching a child's understanding of diversity.

Linking Homeschooling to a Bucket List Life...

Homeschooling can be instrumental in achieving a Bucket List Life. By opting for homeschooling, families can incorporate education seamlessly into their travel plans, exploration of hobbies, and pursuit of personal aspirations. The flexibility of homeschooling allows for immersive experiences, experiential learning, and the pursuit of unique opportunities that align with a family's Bucket List dreams (Haywood, 2023).

Overall, homeschooling presents both benefits and challenges, necessitating mindful deliberation. While offering adaptability, personalization, and a safe learning environment, homeschooling also calls for time, effort, and may have potential limitations in certain areas. By leveraging the strengths of homeschooling and addressing its drawbacks, families can design an educational journey that resonates with their Bucket List aspirations and encourages the comprehensive development of their children.
