Book 41/52 of My #52Books52Weeks Bucket List Challenge
I knew going in that 12 Rules for Life by Jordan B. Peterson would be a heavy read, but I underestimated just how dense it would be. This isn’t a book you fly through—it’s one you have to sit with, digest, and reflect on. In hindsight, it’s probably not the best book to squeeze into a fast-paced #52Books52Weeks challenge, where momentum is key.
I actually finished two other books while trying to get through this one! That said, it’s packed with deep philosophical and psychological insights that make it a worthwhile read if you’re ready to commit to it.
Posture affects your mindset and how others perceive you. Confidence starts with how you carry yourself—literally and figuratively.
We often take better care of others than we do ourselves. This rule reminds us to show ourselves the same kindness, discipline, and care that we would offer a loved one.
Your environment shapes you. Surround yourself with people who lift you up, challenge you, and support your growth, not those who drag you down.
It’s easy to get caught up in comparison culture. Instead, focus on your own small, incremental progress—the Slight Edge effect in action!
This one’s about parenting with intention. If you let bad habits slide in kids, they’ll become entitled, undisciplined adults. Set boundaries and expectations early.
Before you complain about society or blame external factors, get your own life in order. Take responsibility for your circumstances and actions.
Delayed gratification beats instant rewards. Instead of chasing quick wins or comfort, aim for long-term fulfillment and purpose.
Lying (even to yourself) distorts reality and leads to long-term suffering. Truth—no matter how uncomfortable—is the foundation for a strong life.
Be open to learning. Real conversations happen when you listen, rather than just wait for your turn to speak.
Clarity in words = clarity in thought. If you can’t explain something clearly, you probably don’t understand it well enough.
Let people take risks and learn through failure. Overprotection leads to weakness, while challenge builds resilience.
Find small moments of beauty and peace in life, even during tough times.
12 Rules for Life is a deep, thought-provoking book—but it’s not a light read. It took me longer to get through, and in hindsight, I wouldn’t have squeezed it into my #52Books52Weeks challenge. If you’re going to read it, be prepared to slow down and take notes.
That said, Peterson’s insights on responsibility, discipline, and personal growth align well with my Bucket List Life philosophy—take control of your own life, design it with intention, and continuously push yourself to be better.
📖 Have you read this book? What did you think? Let me know!
Stay tuned for Book 42 of 52 as I continue this adventure of learning and growth!
