So, You Want To Be A TEDx Speaker?

So, You Want To Be A TEDx Speaker?

November 24, 20235 min read

My TEDx talk changed my personal and my professional life. Personally, doing a TEDx Talk was on my Bucket List 5 years before I had the chance to finally tick it off. Landing it was a whole other story! I'll save that for later. Nervous was an understatement! Watch it here. Personally, I experienced the 7 benefits I mention at the bottom of this blog post...and then some. My TEDx talk really helped me get on the map as a professional speaker. That's why I encourage all of my mentees who do my Bucket List Business Plan to create and apply to do theirs.

TED Talks and TEDx Talks are two popular platforms for speakers to share their innovative ideas with a global audience. Although these two events share similarities, there are some key differences between them. In this blog post, we will dive into what TED Talks and TEDx Talks are, how to become a speaker and the benefits of speaking at one of these events.

What is a TED Talk vs. a TEDx Talk?

TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) Talks is a series of global events that take place annually in Vancouver, Canada. The event showcases innovative ideas and inspiring talks on a variety of topics, but it is by invitation only, meaning only a select group of individuals are invited to speak.

TEDx Talks are independently organized TED events that are licensed by TED. TEDx events can be organized by anyone, anywhere in the world, as long as they follow TED's guidelines for content and format. TEDx events are more accessible to speakers, as they offer a wider range of opportunities for speakers to share their ideas.

How do I become a TED or TEDx speaker?

Becoming a TED speaker can be a challenging process, as the TED organization is highly selective in choosing its speakers. However, here are a few steps that could increase your chances of being selected:

  1. Apply online: TED has an online application process where you can submit your idea and apply to become a speaker. You will need to provide a brief overview of your idea and a short video that showcases your speaking skills and the content of your idea.

  2. Attend TED events: Attending TED events can help you connect with other speakers and get a better understanding of what makes a successful TED Talk. You can also network with TED organizers and possibly even get invited to speak at a future event.

  3. Get noticed: The TED organization is constantly searching for new and innovative ideas, so if you have a unique perspective or a fresh idea that could change the world, don't hesitate to share it with the world. You can do this by writing a blog, publishing a book, or sharing your idea on social media.

Becoming a TEDx speaker is a more accessible process than becoming a TED speaker, as there are more opportunities available. Here are some steps you can take to become a TEDx speaker:

  1. Research TEDx events: Check out the TEDx website and look for upcoming events that fit your interests and expertise.

  2. Contact the organizers: Reach out to the organizers of the TEDx event and let them know that you're interested in speaking. You can send them a brief overview of your idea and a video of yourself speaking.

  3. Prepare your talk: If you're selected to speak, start preparing your talk well in advance. TEDx talks are usually around 18 minutes long, so make sure you're able to communicate your idea clearly and succinctly.

What are the benefits of speaking at a TED or TEDx event?

Speaking at a TED or TEDx event can have many benefits for your professional speaking career, including:

  1. Increased visibility: TED and TEDx events attract a global audience, which can help you reach a wider audience and gain more exposure for your ideas.

  2. Credibility: Being invited to speak at a TED or TEDx event can help establish your credibility as a thought leader in your field.

  3. Networking opportunities: TED and TEDx events are attended by influential individuals from a variety of industries, providing you with valuable networking opportunities.

  4. Improved speaking skills: Preparing and delivering a TED or TEDx talk requires a high level of skill and preparation, which can help you improve your speaking skills.

  5. Increased confidence: Successfully delivering a TED or TEDx talk can give you a sense of accomplishment and boost your confidence as a speaker.

  6. Content creation: Speaking at a TED or TEDx event can also generate content that you can use for your professional portfolio, website, or social media channels. This can help you establish your personal brand and showcase your expertise.

  7. Book deals: Many TED and TEDx speakers have gone on to write books based on their talks, which can lead to new opportunities and revenue streams.

In conclusion, becoming a TED or TEDx speaker can be a game-changing opportunity for any professional speaker. While becoming a TED speaker can be a highly competitive process, TEDx events offer more accessible opportunities for speakers to share their ideas with the world.

The benefits of speaking at a TED or TEDx event include increased visibility, credibility, networking opportunities, improved speaking skills, increased confidence, content creation, and potentially book deals. If you have a unique and innovative idea that can inspire and motivate audiences, consider applying to become a TED or TEDx speaker and take your speaking career to the next level.

As you know, TED and TEDx talks are all about the "Idea Worth Spreading". I'd love to find out what your idea is. Let's create a time to chat about it...
